How to Build Your Own HOT TUB
Very few things relax the body and soul like soaking in hot water after a long day or sitting outside under the sky during colder days in nicely warm water. Or sharing a quiet evening with your partner while steam rises into the night air. A hot tub feels like luxury.
But it doesn’t have to cost thousands. If you love DIY projects and practical outdoor solutions, here are two affordable ways to build your own backyard hot tub using affordable & accessible materials. I'm in off-grid conditions so i put emphasis on power efficiency in the products. 1.Round DIY Hot Tub (Approx. 1000 L)
A round hot tub creates a natural, organic look in the garden and distributes water pressure evenly. One practical solution I got is using a large round fiberglass (but also food-grade plastic container will do) container with a capacity between 1000–1200 liters.
Why Food-Grade Containers?
Waterproof and durable, non-toxic
Easy to repair (fiberglass cloth + resin)
Food-safe certified options available
Long lifespan
Can be refinished in different colors with non-toxic resin
Installation and Insulation
For better stability and heat retention, the tub can be partially buried in the ground.
Benefits:
improved thermal efficiency
stronger structural stability
more natural appearance
The exterior can be insulated with extruded polystyrene (XPS), which performs well in humid environments. After insulation, the structure can be covered with wooden cladding for a warm, aesthetic finish. An external LPG (propane-butane) water heater is one of the simplest and lowest-maintenance heating olutions. A 10-liter LPG heater with a 50°C output temperature can heat approximately 800 liters of water in about 3 hours.
Heating time depends on:
outside temperature
insulation quality
starting water temperature
If you got a sensor socket with thermostat (link bellow👇) you can automate the shutting off and turning on of the LPG water heater. You can set temperature when to turn ON the pump (36 degrees C) and when to turn it OFF (39 degrees C). If you leave LPG heater ON, the pump will control the heating process based on the thermostat data and you don't have to interrupt your relax time.
You can also use firewood stainless steel bucket for heating the tub (link below👇) with the same pump. It takes longer but you can cook on the bucket in the mean time and enjoy the fire. There is a thermo sifon effect that occurs naturally, but to make sure, it is recommended to use circulation pump for regular flow aswell.
Important:
Always cover the tub while heating. A proper lid significantly reduces heat loss and shortens heating time.
Required components:
*LPG water heater / Wood fire Stainless steel Coil with bucket
*circulation pump
*cartridge pool filter
*heat-resistant hoses (up to 60°C)
*insulated cover
DIY Hot Tub from an IBC Tank (1000 L)
The second option uses an IBC tank. IBC tanks are typically certified for food-grade storage, meaning they do not release harmful chemicals into the water. You can buy new, or second hand. (Always check what was inside when you buy second-hand, get one only used in food industry). When the top section is cut off, whole IBC tank insulated, and clad in wood, the result can be visually pleasing and space saving hot tub.The total capacity is around 1000 liters. However, when two people sit inside, the water displacement reduces the actual heated volume to approximately 800 liters.

The IBC version can also be connected to an LPG heater or wood burner spiral, whatever you prefer (links bellow 👇)
Required components are same as before.
Which DIY Hot Tub Should You Choose?
It's totally up to you. Round Hot Tub has more natural appearance & better garden integration, hasimproved heat retention when buried. IBC Hot Tub can be easier to source, doesn't cost much, if second-hand = lower initial investment, faster setup & is easy to insulate.
Both options are significantly more affordable than commercial hot tubs while they are water and energy efficient. Commercial tubs are much bigger, need more water, more time to heat. If you want tub for yourself and a partner only, ibc tank is fine. They both can be adapted to off-grid or semi off-grid living.
Building your own hot tub is not just about saving money. It’s about creating a space for slowing down. For conversation. For warmth during colder evenings. I wish you many amazing moments in your HOT TUB🙂
